Four years after Harmons birth his mother died in VT. Soon after, hisfather
started with them for Genesee Co., N>Y> where many of the mothers relatives
lived.
In 1818 Harmons father came to Trumbell County, OH. where he stayed for two or
three years before moving to Chester, Geauga Co., OH. In the mean time Harmon
was in New York. At 16 years of age he and his brother,Levi, startedfor
Chester,OH. The whole journey was made on foot.
The first work he found after he was of age was for Esquire Russel, of
Kirtland. Next, he was working on the Wilson farm for a year. After that, seven
years in Gates Mill. While in this mill he became aquainted with Harriet Keyte.
They married shortly thereafter. About two years after their marriage, Harmon
left the mill for a farm.
About 1881, while shingeling a roof Harmon had fallen with great force breaking
and shattering his hip.Henceforth he had become a cripple. Four weeksbefore
his death he had taken ill. A physician was called and directions were followed
with no improvement. The night of death he had awoken at 3o'clock am. Mrs,
Jacobs arose and gave him his medicine.Soon his respiration became difficult
and he had passed away at 4o'colock am.
Last rites were paid to his remains on the following tuesday by Rev. Mr.
Hupseher, of Bainbridge. The text was in Mathew,24th chapter,44th verse. The
pall bearers were, Henry Battles, Edwin Battles,Ira Hoofman, Nelson Wilson,
Henry Higgins and William Southwick.
He stood a little under six feet tall, broad in shoulder and staight in limb,
his powerful frame knit together with powerful muscles. He had blue eyes and
light complexion and regular features.
