William bought land in Bristol, CT in 1741 and later bought a house that had already been built by Caleb Palmer on the west side of Jerome Avenue in Bristol, CT. This house still stands at 367 Jerome Avenue.William kept slaves who slept on the third floor of the Jerome Avenuehouse. Another well known slave owner was Isaac Shelton of Chippen'sHill in Bristol, CT. A bill of sale remains in which a nine year oldgirl, Silpah by name, and a 14 year old boy named Job, were conveyed to William Jerome in 1755. The document was signed by no less a personage than Samuel Newell, the Congregational minister of the parish. William has also been reported to have had four other slaves, named Pompey, Rose, Jenny and Prince.
