General Notes:
Chauncy was a Tory in his sympathies and conversation. He expressed his feelings without reserve and fearlessly- perhaps defiantly - to those who opposed him. His excited partriotic townsmen, to give him a worning and teach him a lesson, strung him up by his thumbs to the limb of a tree tillhis feet barely touched the ground, and then gave him a severe horse-whipping. He could not have been more than twenty five years old at the time, and undoubtedly he was influenced in his sentiments and conduct by his brother in law - Moses Dunbar.-
Even in his later years hew walked erect, with a firm step. He had anintelligent face, a handsome face; his features expressed strength ofcharacter. He was a man to attract notice wherever he might be. Notwithstanding his toryism he was a very worthy man.
